Young Member Volunteer Event to Give Back to Our Veterans at Access Housing

Our Veterans put everything on the line to protect our freedom. We may never be able to repay them for their sacrifice, but we can show them just how much we appreciate all that they’ve done. Please join the SAME DC Post Young Members Committee at Access Housing Inc. DC (AHI) for a day of volunteering.

AHI provides housing, counseling, and rehabilitative services to up to 98 homeless men and women veterans at a time.

Who: You and your family/friends (Kids over 12 years old are welcome to join us!)
What: We are looking for help with organizing their food/clothing pantry, painting, and possibly gardening help. We also need a volunteer to teach a basic social media class and get our vets online applying for jobs and keeping in touch with their families.
When: Saturday, September 24th
Where: Access Housing 820 Chesapeake St. SE, Washington, DC 20032
Time: 8:30a.m. (Donuts and juice will be waiting for you!) until 1:00p.m. Lunch with be served and we will eat with the Vets!

Directions to Access Housing:
From Northern Virginia: Take 1-495 S  to Oxon Hill Rd in Oxon Hill-Glassmanor. Take exit 3B from I-495 E/I-95 N. Take MD-210 N and Southern Ave SE to Chesapeake St SE in Washington.

From Montgomery County: Take I-270 S to I-495 S, then George Washington Memorial Parkway to S. Capitol Street, SW in Washington, DC. Take exit 2 from I-295. Continue on S. Capitol Street SW. Take Atlantic Street, SE to Chesapeake Street.

Metro: The Southern Avenue Metro on the Green Line is the closest to Access Housing. Bus service is available. Take NH1 toward the National Harbor and get off at the Chesapeake Street exit.

2016 Virginia Engineer's Conference

This annual, statewide educational conference is directed towards all engineers and principals of engineering firms in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is jointly sponsored by the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers (VSPE) and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia (ACEC Virginia).

The tracks include professional, technical, business, civil, Project Management and new this year “Innovative Technology of the Future”. You can sign up for seminars in one track or mix them up – the choice is yours. A total of 12 professional development hours (PDH) may be earned by attending the entire conference or 6 in one day.

2016 Team River Runner DC Biathlon

Join the SAME-DC Team Sunday October 2nd, 2016

What's Involved? Approximately 1 mile of paddling and 3 miles of running. Complete both legs (kayak and run) as a single racer, or complete 1 leg as part of a "racing pair" (one member kayaks; the other runs, or if adaptive, may hand cycle). Awards (kayak gear) and a chili feast will be served after the race. Want to be a part of team competition? Join the SAME-DC team for fundraising and/or racing. All participants will receive a really cool TRR t-shirt, light breakfast, lunch and all equipment will be provided (except for paddleboards). If you need adaptive equipment please contact Megan.

Entry Fee? FREE for adaptive participants, $30/ Participant, $10/Student.

SAME Virginia Peninsula Post Industry Day & Scholarship Golf Tournament October 5th, 2016

Join the SAME Virginia Peninsula Post for their annual Industry Day and Golf Tournament on 5 October 2016 at Kiln Creek Golf Course in Newport News. Registration begins at 0745 and the program starts at 830. Golf starts at 1300.

Immediately following golf, they will hand out awards and announce the winners from the raffle.

All proceeds will go towards the Post's scholarship fund supporting local students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Joint SAME DC Post & Northern Virginia Post Young Member Tour of the NIH Bethesda Campus Central Utility Plant (CUP)

On October 27, 2016, the NIH will give a tour of the NIH Bethesda Campus Central Utility Plant (CUP) from 9:30 am until 11:30 am. The CUP has a large program of projects to upgrade and improve the efficiency of this plant, and the Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program has recognized the CUP for the 2016 Energy and Water Program Award. This tour will highlight engineering, construction, and operating challenges that were overcome to operate reliably and efficiently and building a program to continually sustain reduction and continually improve.

We will meet at 9:30 at the NIH Gateway Center which is located adjacent to the Medical Center Metro Station at the South Drive entrance to campus from Rockville Pike/Wisconsin Avenue (Route 355). It combines visitor parking, non-commercial vehicle inspection and visitor ID processing, all in one location. The NIH will process all visitors in vehicles or as pedestrians. Please carpool or take Metro. Wear close toed shoes and bring safety goggles, safety vest, and hard hats if you have them.
