75th Anniversary of the Seabees Breakfast Celebrating Seabee Accomplishments in Vietnam

SAME Foundation Now Accepting Donations

Spring 2016 SAME established the Society of American Military Engineers Foundation ("Foundation") as a separate 501(c)3 tax exempt organization to provide a secure and beneficial repository for charitable and other bequeaths from members of the Society and the public at large. In addition, the Fund will separate the philanthropic objectives of the Society from the Society's day to day operations. The primary purpose of the Foundation is to continue to promote the strategic goals of the Society and to support the development and growth of members and future members. Therefore, spending will include but is not limited to the following:

  • Funding member professional development and career advancement programs, including negotiating certification discounts, and then funding the programs
  • Providing stipends to fund member travel to SAME events
  • Supporting SAME Engineering & Construction Camps
  • Promoting STEM-related initiatives
  • Providing scholarships to students who are pursuing degrees in STEM-related fields

Young Member Volunteer Event to Give Back to Our Veterans at Access Housing

Our Veterans put everything on the line to protect our freedom. We may never be able to repay them for their sacrifice, but we can show them just how much we appreciate all that they’ve done. Please join the SAME DC Post Young Members Committee at Access Housing Inc. DC (AHI) for a day of volunteering.

AHI provides housing, counseling, and rehabilitative services to up to 98 homeless men and women veterans at a time.

Who: You and your family/friends (Kids over 12 years old are welcome to join us!)
What: We are looking for help with organizing their food/clothing pantry, painting, and possibly gardening help. We also need a volunteer to teach a basic social media class and get our vets online applying for jobs and keeping in touch with their families.
When: Saturday, September 24th
Where: Access Housing 820 Chesapeake St. SE, Washington, DC 20032
Time: 8:30a.m. (Donuts and juice will be waiting for you!) until 1:00p.m. Lunch with be served and we will eat with the Vets!

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Site Tour & Business Briefing

SOLD OUT!

Please join the SAME DC Post and CMAA NCC on August 23rd, 2016 for a joint project tour, business briefing and luncheon at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC).Registration is limited to the first 35 registrants! Attendees can earn up to 2.5 PDHs.

The event will begin with a tour of Project P-130, Mechanical and Electrical Improvements, which is being built by Whiting-Turner. The P-130 Project is a 1,200 LF utility tunnel valued at approximately $39 million. During the tour we will learn about construction practices, materials, and challenges met. Following the tour we will convene at another location within the Center and have a business briefing on ongoing projects at the facility. The event will conclude with a luncheon.

SAME Resilience Roundtable: Designing and Building 22nd Century Infrastructure

Our current, challenging building environment includes many issues like resilience, sustainability, triple bottom line, and life cycle maintenance which go beyond our basic, code-based design requirements. Please join the SAME DC Post and the Northern Virginia Post on April 25th for a forum that will investigate the perspectives of academia, facilities owners, A/E firms, and government on designing and building for these competing requirements and support our aspirations to design and build infrastructure that works today, survives disasters, and causes our great, great grandchildren to say, “Those old folks really were smart!”

Navy Energy and Environmental Readiness Luncheon Recap

SAME DC Seeking Volunteers for USA Science & Engineering Festival

SAME DC Post is participating in the 4th USA Science & Engineering Festival, the largest science festival in the US, featuring nationwide contests and school programs. We are looking for volunteers to help man our booth! Shifts are only 2-3 hours.

The event is April 15-17th.  The Festival will take place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center 801 Mount Vernon Place (between 9th and 7th Streets NW on L Street NW)

This is a wonderful FREE family event. This is a great opportunity for teenagers to earn community service hours! Everyone who volunteers gets a free t-shirt! SAME Camp Mentor Stipend Applications Due April 5th

Camp MentorsThe DC Post is excited to sponsor two members to serve as mentors at one of the three SAME Engineering & Construction Camps by paying all transportation costs to the camp.  Once at the camp, you will stay with the students and other mentors at no cost.  We encourage you to consider this wonderful opportunity to spend a week at one of the SAME camps to mentor high school students who have expressed an interest in studying architecture or engineering in college. Each mentor is assigned to a group of 10-12 high school students.  We are particularly in need of female mentors as the camps normally have 20 percent female students. 

Each mentor must be endorsed by a SAME Post as part of their application.  To be considered for endorsement by the SAME DC Post, please submit your application via e-mail to LT Jay Shirey at jay.m.shirey@uscg.mil no later than April 5. The Application and Criteria for being a mentor can be found here.   The dates and locations of the three camps are:

02/11/16 USA Science & Engineering Festival Leadership & Volunteer Opportunities

The SAME DC Post is seeking co-chairs to help plan, manage, and run the Post’s exhibitor booth at the 2016 4th Annual USA Science and Engineering Festival on April 15 through 17 at the Washington, DC Convention Center. This is an excellent opportunity to take on a leadership role in the DC Post, promote STEM careers, and network with clients.

The USA Science and Engineering Festival is the single largest free science and engineering festival in the world with an anticipated 350,000 attendees visiting booths hosted by over 1,000 exhibitors, including non-profit organizations such as SAME, universities and colleges, companies, individuals.

In 2014, the DC SAME Post hosted a successful exhibit demonstrating hydrogen fuel cells. The 2014 volunteers engaged thousands of children and adults through-out the three days of the festival explaining and demonstrating how fuel cells work. The attendees were able to power up their own fuel cell and use it to power a model car.

In 2016, the DC SAME Post will go back to the basics, and seek to demonstrate the creation and use of simple electrical circuits using food, and everyday kitchen and household items. For the weekend of the Festival, we will have 30+ volunteers to man the booth over the three days.

As co-chair you there is only one requirement; Enthusiasm! Responsibilities for the co-chairs will be:
- Volunteer organization and management – we will use www.volunteerspot.com
- Exhibit Refinement
- Coordination for set-up of exhibit

The DC Post is now accepting applications for the 2016 SAME DC Post Leadership and Mentoring Program. This is a unique opportunity for Young Members, Junior Officers, and NCOs to be mentored by SAME Fellows and senior leaders while developing their leadership skills through focused educational sessions.

12/03/15 DC Post Holiday Party & Armed Forces Appreciation Night

SAME DC Post members and colleagues gathered at the Army Navy Club on December 3rd to celebrate the holidays and the closing of another memorable year. The SAME DC Post recognized a Wounded Warrior and several servicemen and women for their outstanding service and commitment.

In honor of our servicemen and women the DC Post contributed to $750 each to Team River Runners (TRR) in support of our Wounded Warriors and Final Salute, Inc., which supports homeless female veterans.

Prior to the DC Post's annual Holiday Party, Young Members were invited to arrive early to network with the Board of Directors and its associated Fellows.  This event gave Young Members the opportunity to learn about leadership opportunities in the Post, get to know their Board of Directors, and network with other young members.

11/19/15 USACE Mission in Afghanistan Luncheon

On November 19th, 2015, the SAME DC Post hosted a luncheon featuring Major General Todd Semonite recently returned from a one-year tour in Afghanistan as the Commanding General, Combined Security Transition Command - Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. MG Semonite shared his great story on how US Forces accomplished the Train, Advise and Assist mission with emphasis on the Engineer mission.

6/21/15 YM DC Central Kitchen Volunteer Event

The SAME DC Post Young Members volunteered at the DC Central Kitchen on June 21st for the second year in a row.  Our group helped transform 3,000 pounds of donated food into 5,000 balanced meals that DC Central Kitchen distributes to 88 nearby homeless shelters, transitional homes, and nonprofit organizations. 6/9/15 Young Member Project Tour: Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

The SAME Washington DC Post Young Members took a project site tour of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) on June 9th, 2015. The new museum occupies the last available space on the National Mall and is situated prominently between the National Museum of American History and 15th Street, next to the Washington Monument. When it opens to the public in 2016, the museum will be a centerpiece venue for ceremonies and performances, as well as a primary exhibition space for African American history and culture.
